Why source from Vietnam

  1. 01

A wide free trade agreement network

Vietnam is party to many FTAs, including EVFTA, UKVFTA, CPTPP and RCEP, so goods with a valid certificate of origin can enter key markets at reduced or zero duty when the rules of origin are met.

  2. 02

    A broad, maturing manufacturing base

Vietnam is one of the world's leading exporters of electronics, textiles and garments, footwear, furniture, coffee, cashew, pepper, rice and seafood, with supply chains that keep deepening into components and materials.

  3. 03

    Diversification and China+1 strategies

Many brands and importers add Vietnamese suppliers to spread country risk, shorten lead times to Asian markets and balance tariff exposure, without leaving the regional supply chain.

  4. 04

    Deep-water ports and growing infrastructure

The Cái Mép – Thị Vải complex in the south and Lạch Huyện in Hải Phòng receive direct mainline services to Europe and North America, supported by expanding expressways, industrial parks and air cargo capacity.

  5. 05

    A skilled, adaptable workforce

A young labour force, strong experience with export orders and growing technical skills make Vietnam competitive for both labour-intensive products and more complex assembly.

Global Sourcing

How sourcing with GLG works

Six steps from your first request to delivery at your door, with one team accountable for the whole chain.

  1. 01

    Sourcing request (RFQ)

You send product specifications, target quantity, quality standards, destination and preferred Incoterm. We review the brief with you and clarify anything that suppliers would otherwise interpret differently.

  2. 02

    Supplier search and shortlist

We screen candidates through our network, industry associations, trade fairs and field contacts, then present a shortlist with capabilities, indicative prices, MOQ and lead time for your comparison.

  3. 03

    Verification and factory audit

Before you commit, we check legal registration, export history, certificates and production capacity, and can visit or audit the factory so you know who you are actually dealing with.

  4. 04

    Samples and negotiation

We consolidate and ship samples from several suppliers in one parcel, help compare them against your specification and support communication on price, payment terms and contract details.

  5. 05

    Quality control inspection

During production or before shipment, inspectors check quantity, workmanship, packing and labelling against the agreed specification and an AQL sampling plan, and you receive a photo report.

  6. 06

    Logistics, customs and delivery

GLG books the freight, prepares or checks trade documents, clears customs at both ends where needed, arranges cargo insurance and delivers to your door, with tracking at every milestone.

How GLG verifies partners

Before a supplier is shortlisted or published in our directory, GLG checks the points below and records the date of the check.

  • Business registration and legal representative, checked against the national business registry
  • Export or import licences where required, and actual trading history
  • Factory visit or audit: premises, machinery, workforce and production flow
  • Validity and scope of certificates such as ISO 9001, HACCP, BRCGS, BSCI or FSC, checked with the issuing body
  • Production capacity compared with your volume and delivery schedule
  • Customer references and examples of previous export shipments
  • Screening of the company and its owners against sanctions and denied-party lists
  • Basic financial standing and any visible signs of disputes or tax issues

How to source safely across borders

Most sourcing problems are created before the first container is loaded: a vague request, a sample that does not match production, or payment terms that leave the buyer with no leverage. The practical steps below apply whether you are buying cashew kernels from the Mekong Delta or a production line from Europe.

Write a request suppliers cannot misread

A good request for quotation lists the product name and grade, technical specification or drawing, materials, tolerances, packing, labelling, certifications needed for your market, annual and per-order volume, target delivery date, destination and preferred Incoterm. Ask every supplier to quote on the same basis so that prices are truly comparable. If you only send a photo and a target price, you will receive quotations for different products.

Lock the specification and the golden sample

Agree a written specification and keep a signed or sealed reference sample on both sides. For agricultural products, define moisture, defect rates, size and foreign matter limits; for manufactured goods, define dimensions, materials, finishing and functional tests. This reference becomes the basis for inspection and for any claim later.

Choose payment terms that match the risk

With a new supplier, avoid paying the full amount in advance. Common structures are a deposit with the balance against a copy of the bill of lading, a documentary collection, or a letter of credit for larger or first orders. Make sure the documents required under the L/C or contract are ones the seller can actually produce, because discrepancies delay payment and release of goods.

Payment methodBuyer riskWhen it fits
Full advance (T/T)HighSmall trial orders with a verified supplier
Deposit + balance against B/L copyMediumRepeat orders, established relationship
Documentary collection (D/P)MediumBuyer wants documents to pass through banks
Letter of credit (L/C)LowerFirst large orders, new trading partners

Pick the Incoterm deliberately

FOB keeps freight control with the buyer and is common for Vietnamese exports; CIF or CFR may look convenient but leave the choice of carrier and its costs to the seller. EXW often creates problems in Vietnam because the seller still has to handle export customs in practice. For imports into Vietnam, DAP or CIP is useful when the foreign supplier delivers to the site, while FCA or FOB lets you use your own forwarder. Always name the exact place or port after the term.

Inspect before you pay the balance

Schedule a pre-shipment inspection when at least 80 percent of the order is packed, using an agreed sampling level. For food and agricultural products, add laboratory tests for residues, aflatoxin or microbiology as required by the destination market. Loading supervision confirms that the inspected goods are the ones that go into the container.

Protect your design and your contract

  • Register trademarks and, where relevant, designs in the supplier country before sharing sensitive drawings.
  • Use a written contract or purchase order that states specification, quantity tolerance, delivery time, penalties, inspection rights and governing law or arbitration.
  • Sign a non-disclosure and non-use agreement for custom products and moulds, and record who owns the tooling.
  • Keep all agreements, sample approvals and change requests in writing.
  • Confirm the bank account belongs to the contracted company and verify any change of payment details by phone with a known contact.

Payment fraud through fake emails asking to change bank details is a frequent risk in international trade. Never change beneficiary details based on email alone.

Plan logistics early

Packaging, palletisation, container type and documentation requirements should be agreed before production, not at the factory gate. Ask early about phytosanitary or health certificates, fumigation, certificates of origin for FTA preferences and any specialised import inspections at destination. Involving your forwarder at the quotation stage avoids surprises in cost and lead time.

Frequently asked questions

Is GLG a trading company that sells goods?

No. GLG does not buy and resell goods. We help buyers find and verify suppliers, coordinate samples and inspections, and provide logistics, customs and documentation services, while the sales contract is signed directly between buyer and seller.

Can you help Vietnamese companies find suppliers abroad?

Yes. The module works in both directions: we help Vietnamese manufacturers and distributors find international suppliers of machinery, materials and ingredients, and we handle the import procedures and delivery in Vietnam.

What information do you need to start a sourcing request?

Product description and specification, quantity, quality and certification requirements, destination, target timing and preferred Incoterm. Drawings, photos or a reference sample help us brief suppliers accurately.

Do you guarantee the supplier will perform?

No one can guarantee future performance. Verification, audits and inspections significantly reduce risk by showing the facts at the time of the check, and well-structured payment terms and contracts protect you further.

Can I use only part of the service, for example inspection or shipping?

Yes. You can request a single service such as a factory audit, a pre-shipment inspection or freight and customs only, even if you found the supplier yourself.

Can you help me use FTA preferential duties?

We can check whether the product is likely to meet the relevant rules of origin, coordinate the certificate of origin or origin declaration with the exporter, and make sure it matches the other shipping documents.
