Market intelligence

Global freight rate trends

An overview of international shipping prices: benchmark container and dry bulk indices, plus GLG market quotes for the main ocean and air lanes out of Vietnam. Each figure shows its source, date and publication frequency.

Data feeds are being connected. Values appear here as soon as the first index or quote is published.

By index and lane

Rates by mode and route

Pick an index or lane for its full history, recent values and changes. Lanes from Vietnam use GLG market quotes, because public indices are mostly China-based.

No rate data has been published on this page yet. The indices and lanes below are tracked; their values, dates and sources will appear here once the data feed or the first GLG quote is in.

Methodology

Each series is a time series of one index or one lane, in a single unit. Values are stored as published and never estimated, interpolated or smoothed. If a source has not published a new value, the last known value and its date are shown.

Week-on-week change compares the latest value with the value closest to seven days earlier (within ±3 days); month-on-month uses about 30 days (±7) and year-on-year about 365 days (±14). A change is only shown when such a reference value exists. Lanes quoted irregularly are compared with the previous quote.

Index dates are the date the value was recorded by the data provider, which can be a day after the publisher's release. GLG lane quotes are dated by their effective date; ocean quotes are all-in base ocean freight per container, air quotes are per chargeable kilogram, unless the note says otherwise.

Regional trends average each lane rebased to 100 at the start of the period, so lanes with different price levels weigh equally.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real-time freight rates?

No. Benchmark indices are published daily (Baltic Exchange) or weekly (Drewry WCI on Thursdays, SCFI on Fridays), and each value on this page shows its date. Truly real-time spot rates require a paid, licensed data feed. For a firm price for your cargo, ask GLG for a quote.

Where do the numbers come from?

Benchmark indices are retrieved from their publishers through licensed data providers, and Vietnam-origin lanes use market quotes collected by GLG's pricing team. Each chart names its source; the "Sources and licences" table lists them all. The latest data point on this page is dated —.

Why do the indices differ from the price I am quoted?

Indices are averages of spot rates on broad trade lanes (for example China/East Asia to North Europe). A quote for your shipment also depends on the exact ports, container type, carrier, transit time, free time, surcharges such as BAF, PSS or war-risk, and validity. Use the trend to judge market direction, then confirm with a quote.

What do FEU, 40HC and USD/kg mean?

FEU is a forty-foot equivalent unit (one 40-foot container). 40HC is a 40-foot high-cube container, the default type for GLG ocean lanes on this page; 20GP and 40GP are standard 20- and 40-foot containers. Air cargo rates are shown in US dollars per chargeable kilogram.

How often is the page updated?

Index data is checked several times a day and stored as soon as a new value is published. GLG lane quotes are added by the pricing team when market rates are reviewed. Each card shows the date of its latest value.

Need a firm rate?
