Frequently asked questions about seaports
What is a UN/LOCODE?
UN/LOCODE is the United Nations code for trade and transport locations: two letters for the country plus three characters for the place, for example VNHPH for Hai Phong or NLRTM for Rotterdam. It is used on bookings, bills of lading and customs filings, so using the correct code avoids misrouting.
Which seaports in Vietnam handle international container ships?
In the south, Cai Mep – Thi Vai receives large mainline vessels on direct routes to the US and Europe, and Cat Lai in Ho Chi Minh City handles a large share of intra-Asia services. In the north, Hai Phong and its deep-water Lach Huyen area are the main gateways. Da Nang, Quy Nhon and other central ports mostly connect via regional and feeder services.
What is the difference between a gateway port and a transshipment hub?
A gateway port mainly handles cargo for its own hinterland, moving in and out by road, rail or barge. A transshipment hub such as Singapore, Port Klang, Busan or Colombo mainly moves containers from one ship to another, connecting long-haul services with feeder routes.
Does this directory list every port in the world?
It lists every port in the NGA World Port Index — the standard international reference of several thousand ports — except jurisdictions under UN sanctions excluded by our policy. Major ports have full guides; the others have a data page from the index. Private terminals and very small harbors may be missing; we can still quote them.
