About the port of Hai Phong
Hai Phong is the main seaport system of northern Vietnam and the gateway for the industrial belt of the Red River Delta, including Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hai Duong and Hung Yen, where many electronics and manufacturing plants are located.
Terminals stretch from the older river berths near the city centre to the Dinh Vu peninsula and the deep-water Lach Huyen area on Cat Hai island. River terminals mainly serve intra-Asia and feeder ships, while larger vessels call at Lach Huyen.
Most services to China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia call here several times a week. Long-haul cargo is either loaded on direct services from Lach Huyen or relayed via hubs such as Hong Kong, Busan or Singapore.
Hai Phong is a container gateway: most boxes handled are imports and exports for its own hinterland, carried on mainline and regional services.

Customs and documentation tips
- Export and import declarations in Vietnam are lodged electronically via the VNACCS/VCIS system; prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, contract and bill of lading.
- Check whether goods require specialised inspection, licences or quarantine before arrival or loading, as this affects clearance time at the port.
- If you claim preferential tariffs, prepare the certificate or self-certification of origin under the relevant FTA (e.g. ATIGA, RCEP, CPTPP, EVFTA).
- Confirm free time for containers at the terminal and depot to avoid demurrage and detention charges.
- Declare the verified gross mass (VGM) of each export container before the carrier’s cut-off.
