About the port of Lach Huyen (Hai Phong)

Lach Huyen is the deep-water container area of the Hai Phong port system, built at the mouth of the Lach Huyen channel on Cat Hai island. Its channel and berths allow much larger ships than the river terminals of Hai Phong.

The first container terminal began operating in 2018, and further berths have been added since by Vietnamese terminal operators. The area has enabled direct services from northern Vietnam to North America and other long-haul destinations without transshipment.

For shippers in the northern provinces, Lach Huyen shortens the land leg compared with sending export containers to southern ports, and is connected to the Hanoi – Hai Phong expressway by a sea-crossing bridge.

Lach Huyen (Hai Phong) is a container gateway: most boxes handled are imports and exports for its own hinterland, carried on mainline and regional services.

Customs and documentation tips

  • Export and import declarations in Vietnam are lodged electronically via the VNACCS/VCIS system; prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, contract and bill of lading.
  • Check whether goods require specialised inspection, licences or quarantine before arrival or loading, as this affects clearance time at the port.
  • If you claim preferential tariffs, prepare the certificate or self-certification of origin under the relevant FTA (e.g. ATIGA, RCEP, CPTPP, EVFTA).
  • Confirm free time for containers at the terminal and depot to avoid demurrage and detention charges.
  • Declare the verified gross mass (VGM) of each export container before the carrier’s cut-off.
