How we define an international airport
OurAirports does not flag airports as “international”, so this list follows a transparent rule applied to its data:
Large airports with scheduled passenger service, plus medium-sized airports with scheduled service and an IATA code whose name contains “International” or a local equivalent (for example Internacional, Intl, Aéroport international, Uluslararası, 国际, 国際).
Every listed airport has an IATA code. Military air bases without scheduled service, heliports, seaplane bases and closed airports are not included.
Countries under United Nations Security Council country-level sanctions are excluded, in line with our Global Market directory: North Korea, Iran, Libya, Sudan, South Sudan. Western Sahara is not listed as a separate territory.
Some large airports with mostly domestic traffic are included, and a few airports with occasional international flights may be missing. The rule is applied automatically every time the data is refreshed.
Frequently asked questions
How many international airports are listed?
The directory lists 1,412 international airports in 219 countries and territories (1,127 large airports), based on OurAirports data as of 20 Oct 2026.
What is the difference between IATA and ICAO airport codes?
IATA codes have three letters (for example SGN for Tan Son Nhat) and are used on tickets, air waybills and cargo labels. ICAO codes have four letters (VVTS) and are used by air traffic control and flight planning. Each airport page shows both when available.
Why are some countries missing?
Countries under UN Security Council country-level sanctions (North Korea, Iran, Libya, Sudan, South Sudan) are excluded. A few small countries have no airport that meets the definition, for example where the nearest international airport is across the border.
