FCL vs LCL: What’s the Difference and Which Is More Cost-Effective?
Compare full container load (FCL) and less than container load (LCL) on cost, transit time and risk, with volume thresholds to help you choose.
FCL (Full Container Load) means booking an entire container for your shipment alone. LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo is consolidated in a shared container with goods from other shippers.
Cost
LCL is charged per cubic meter or per ton, which suits small shipments. From around 15 m³ upwards, a 20' container is usually already cheaper than the total LCL charges.
Transit time and risk
FCL moves directly from the shipper’s warehouse to the consignee, so it is 3–7 days faster with less risk of handling damage. LCL has to pass through consolidation and deconsolidation warehouses at both ends.
Which option should you choose?
- Under 10 m³: choose LCL
- 10–15 m³: compare actual quotes
- Over 15 m³, or fragile and high-value goods: choose FCL
